Blog Assignment 1
"Beowulf and Grendel are characters that I wouldn't say are exactly alike, but similar. They are both looking for one thing, happiness. Beowulf is looking for happiness in adding on to his glorious record by defeating Grendel and becoming a hero. On the other hand, Grendel is lonely and need companionship and that is where he will finally find his happiness. In the end, Beowulf ends his pursuit of happiness while Grendel falls short.
In Beowulf, we meet Beowulf, an egotistical individual who is the hero of the novel. He boasts of his skills, strength, and achievements to King Hrothgar in hopes of being allowed to defeat the wicked beast. He is positive that he will defeat Grendel with his bare hands, bring peace to the Danes, and be the all-mighty hero. However, we only see the storyteller's side of the story, not Grendel's, is Beowulf really the hero?
I believe Grendel, in my opinion, is a misunderstood monster. He is all he has in his lonely world, everyone looks at him as a monster and his mother cannot even communicate with him. His first encounter with man did not go so well and this marks the beginning of the horrible relationship with the race. He tried to find companionship with the people and failed with no avail. His frustrations and loneliness lead him in one path, destruction.
The finale to both books was the battle between Grendel and Beowulf. Evidently, Beowulf wins the battle and is now the hero of the Danes. However, Grendel cries home, alone, to his mother to die a lonely death. While on the pursuit happiness there are trials and tribulations, like both Grendel and Beowulf faced, only you stand in your own way."
